Welcome to the Web Home of WellBegun!

If you are visiting this site, a new baby is probably on his or her way into your life.  Congratulations!

A famous proverb tells us that "well begun is half done."  As parents, we are never done, but many of the most important decisions we can make for our children's lives are made before that child is ever born.

The mission of WellBegun is to provide you with information to help you make many of the most important decisions you can make for your family, as well as support to follow through on those decisions.

The vision of WellBegun is a growing world of healthy, happy families, with each member cherished and cared for from the beginning.

Did You know?
There are two models of birth care: the obstetric
model and the midwifery model.

The obstetric model of care sees birth as a dangerous medical event, an accident waiting to happen from which the mother and baby must be delivered.  The work of bringing the baby out of the mother and into the world is done by the care provider.

The midwifery model sees birth as a normal physiological process in a woman's life, and the attendant's job is to assist in this great work done by the mother, primarily providing support and hands-on assistance if needed.

Don't be fooled by words - there are some obstetricians out there who practice in the midwifery model of care, and some midwives who practice in the obstetric model.

Choose the birth attendant who is right for your needs!
